Demo announcement (Soon)

Well it seems that our cries for justice against the wave of “No demo” threads will finally be put to rest “That is if the announcement is there will be a demo released on …”. It seems that on facebook CM have posted a comment saying:

We will have an official demo announcement very soon…please hang tight.

The main irony is the fact that just as it was said a new thread appeared saying no demo. Maybe this message was set on a timer? :)

Release date (Update)

Recentely alot of people have been doubting that the release will not go ahead as planned for the 6th US, 8th EPAC and 9th UK. Helios today has created a sticky thread saying that this is indeed not so.

There seems to be a bit of confusion on the forums about the release date for the game and that it might have been pushed back.

This isn’t the case and the release dates are still confirmed as being, October 6th in North America, October 8th through European, Pacific, Asian and Canadian territories… Read on

UK pre-order offers

Below is a list of the british sites that have pre-order offers for the game.

GAME (Night Raid)

Players take control of a Spec Ops team, assaulting PLA units defending a key infrastructure asset on the Island. Using night vision, giving the player’s fireteam better visual range than the PLA defenders, players can choose whether to move slowly and stealthily, at the risk of the location being reinforced, or “go loud” and move quickly, but blowing the cover of night.

Play.com (Coastal Stronghold)

Players assume control of an infantry fireteam, raiding a key PLA coastal defensive position. Once the PLA defenders have been eliminated, the player will have to organise their fireteam to hold the location from PLA counter attacks, improvising defensive positions and using any fixed weapons they can find to tip the balance in their favour.

HMV (Ambush)

Surrounded and outgunned, players control a lone infantry fireteam, tasked with holding a village against waves of PLA attackers. With the PLA assaulting from 360 degrees, players must use their fireteam to cover all the directions, using defensive cover offered by the village to hold off the attacking force. Players will use building defensive positions, fan their fireteam out amongst the village and constantly position their fireteam to offer optimal protection against the attacking PLA force.

Gamestation (Close Quarters)

A bold daytime raid on a village, the players assume control of an infantry fireteam tasked with flushing the PLA out of a village location. The PLA are already dug into strong defensive positions, and reinforcements will be on their way, so players must move swiftly to eliminate the PLA inside the village before holding off reinforcement waves from within the village. Using CBQ weaponry, grenade launchers and anti-vehicle weapons, this is a fast-paced and intensive FTE featuring building destruction and close quarters combat.

Mark Turosz’s (N/A Marketing Manager) GT interview.

Thanks for Shaz for finding this video.

I don’t know what to think about this video. Alot of  missed placed words like “no gun sights” and The Qween Bee is a Bazooka. To the average person they will think no Iron sights, where as Mark meant no crosshair visual feedback at higher modes. Another gaff is where he basically noted AAV’s stormed the beaches in normandy. The best being a mention of a editor with no note that the console will not have a editor. The way he worded his sentence any non fan just watching this is going to think there is a editor on all platforms.

Personally As much as this is a nice summary of the game, and there is a nice brief hit on MP game types. I think the confusion level in this video is too high for the general public. I forsee this causing alot of trouble in the near future.

New magazine scan’s found

New magazine scan’s have been found by community member Shaz73. There was, unfortunately, no source included. The magazine praises OFP: Dragon Rising for it’s unforgiving realism. The Article also came with a good, fitting quote:

Your Fleshy Human Marionette contains eight fresh pints of blood – but not for long

The scan’s can be found on the official Codemasters Forum

Helios on Swimming/Jumping

As posted by Helios today:

Hi all,

I remember recently a few people have asked about jumping and swimming in the game, so I just thought I’d share a few details regarding these actions, and whether they will be in the game or not.

There isn’t a jump button in the game, but there is an “interact” button which allows you to do things such as vault over small obstacles, open doors etc.

As for swimming, I’ve been told that this is possible and if you really wanted to you’ll actually be able to swim around the whole of Skira island. Bit mental perhaps, but it’s nice to know you’ll have the option tongue Helios on Swimming/Jumping

The swimming (which is actually more like treading water whilst moving in one direction) will only be at surface level though and you won’t be able to dive below the surface. I’m sure you will agree that with all your gear this probably wouldn’t be very realistic anyway?

It is important to note that is now confirms that we will now be able to tread water (much like ARMA, no FarCry2 sidestep swimming) as well this confirms that there is no designated jump button, so there should be no bunny hopping. It is possible however that this interactive button is always active and the default action is jump. However this is good news and a good step forward for OFP2.

No info this week – CM to Release a thick new OFP2 Promo

This a Update on the New hands-on information delayed to next week news story.

I talked to Helios today about hands on information that was previously intended to be released last week (and was subsequently was postponed for internal review). It was hopeful that the hands on information (that was coming in the form of text and possibly pictures) would be released this week, but that is no longer the case.

Great news though, the reason behind this is that Codemasters’ is now rolling Helios‘ hands on with a great amount of new content, to create a thick new OFP2 Promo. It looks like from what what I hear, text and other media content. It’s being created at the caliber of a official promotional release”, however It is unknown exactly what is in the promo. With at title I expect it to be good; as I have been told it’s has a large amount of worth while content, as well this release is expected also to go to major media sites. So we should see a massive quality increase as it jumps from a ‘community promotional release’ to a “official promotional release”.

It is expected sooner then later this month. No official date has been given to the public. The postponement is now is due the creation and acquiring of “other media” content for the promo.

On a side note, this will also be a good first look of what Codemasters advertisement department style and what is considered a larger release. This will also perhaps mark the start of the promised ‘Advertisement Blitz’ leading into OFP2’s release – Fingers Crossed!

OFP:DR “most extensive marketing investment ever”

Posted by Community member PhilipLarkin is a new article from MVC in which CM speaks of the largest marketing plan to date.

“Operation Flashpoint is set to benefit from the publisher’s largest ever marketing spend on a single title.”

“We are rolling out Codemasters’ highest impact campaigns across the titles, with Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising representing our most extensive marketing investment ever,” said UK general manager Jeremy Wigmore.

“In addition, Codemasters has recruited Jon Tibble as UK sales manager and Ben Croucher as UK trade marketing manager.

Tibble joins the firm after spending eight years at Vivendi Games, most recently as UK sales manager, and has also held roles at Gauntlet Entertainment and Ingram Micro. In his new role, Tibble will be responsible for all UK and Irish sales, and will report directly to general manager Jeremy Wigmore.

Ben Croucher joins after spending four years on Ubisoft’s trade marketing team. He will now be responsible for product visibility and pre-sell incentives across all UK retail chains for Codemasters’ upcoming products. Croucher will also report to Wigmore.

(Either JavaScript is not active or you are using an old version of Adobe Flash Player. Please install the newest Flash Player.)

With the addition of the following Russian interview the Operation Flashpoint 2 – Complete Collection is now fully complete. Previous to a few months back only a few videos due to site features eluded capture. With the advent of better tools in my possession these videos elude me no more. They have been uploaded and are now part of the complete OFP2 collection.

I pride my selfs in providing the best possible service to the community at large. If you know of any videos that have not made the collection – please drop me a line via the forums, or youtube and I will promptly get it added to the collection.

Lastly I would like to thank supporters of the community services, and those whom promote and use it day to day. Your dedication has helped push the views of the OFP2 video channel to almost double it’s daily views. There is still much growth to be done – so keep promoting!

OFP:DR wins Xfire clan of the month

It is with great pleasure that I announce that overnight (for North America), the Heroes of OFP2 (The Community Forum Group) won the Xfire Clan of the month.

This is a great achievement for OFP2, and the community behind it. My thanks thanks go to everyone who made this happen!

Also a thanks to Helios and the CM producer for the heads up,

View: Xfire’s Email announcement
View: Original Post that won it
Go to: The Xfire Group Page

I would like to remind everyone to keep promoting day to day. Don’t see this achievement as a end or a time to let up promoting community growth and development. A large strong Xfire benefits us all – it’s a great show of community power and strength. Not to mention a great tool for events, instant messaging and stat collection. It will also be the staging ground for the community servers and ingame events.

So keep it bookmarked. I’m working on getting a server inbound, I’m just trying to get enough ‘image’ to convince people to donate a $400 USD a month server to a gaming group.

Helios speaks about unit numbers under command

There has been alot of talk and moaning regarding the perceived notion of having only 4 units under your command with no ability to expand this number. Helios today clarified the information presented in the UGO preview and the public view generated from the EGO preview.

Hi all,

I just wanted to clarify that in Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising the player will be able to command not just the one 4 man fireteam as was said in the UGO preview, but as a squad leader multiple fireteams.

Helios speaks of difficulty modes

Just posted, Helios speaks of the difficulty modes found in Operation Flashpoint 2.

Hi all,

I’ve commented about this briefly in a couple of threads, but I’m a bit concerned that these comments are being missed so thought I’d start a new thread smile Helios speaks of difficulty modes

I’ve noticed that quite a few of you have raised some concerns that the latest OFP: DR EGO tech video shows the presence of such things as directional hit indicators, crosshairs that change colour when hovering over friendly/hostile units and even crosshairs in general. I just want to allay some of your fears and confirm to you that after speaking to the devs the level of difficulty you choose will help drive the amount of on-screen gameplay helpers that the player will receive, and that the game will have a “hard” mode where there will be a minimal number of HUD elements onscreen.

Coupled with the great advances in enemy AI in the game and I’m sure you will find the “hard” mode in OFP: DR more than a challenge.

Intel – Geek Out – Interview and Particle Emitter Demo

OFP2 Particle Effects Simulation

Intel – Geek Out – Interview and Particle Emitter Demo

Posted moments ago by Helios was a link to a Intel sponsored interview with a flash tech simulator. This simulator shows you how Particle emitters work in games, and allows you to make your own explosion. It is really quite the fun and has a good level of depth.

http://OperationFlashpoint2.org is looking to see your submissions, please post in the comments in this news post your creations – we want to see them!

In this exclusive interview with Intel Game On, Codemasters’ Andrew Dennison, Rendering Group Lead on Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising explains why, if you want realism, you don’t just need a capable graphics card, you need a powerful CPU.

The Geekout notes a second interview. The next interview will be in regards to the very important AI path finding code.

The questions have been reposted for archival purposes below.

Upcoming release date announced

Helios just announced that the official release date (Yes, A date, not a period) will be announced on the upcoming Friday, in the early morning, to be precise. Helios also told us there’ll be a new video, showing the Armoury of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. Helios also promised us a brand new set of screenshots. To “Get a whet appetite” Helios also posted 2 new screenshots.

Screenshot 1

Sound team Q&A 07-07-2009

At approximately 09:36 AM: Helios got a list of replies to some questions the community had asked, the questions and answers are here and the discussion area is here.

Snippet:

Member: Staticks

Is all the sound effects for this trailer fake and prerecorded? By that, I mean are they recorded specifically to make this trailer feel more seamless and cinematic?

Because I’m very very skeptical that the final game will have sound effects this good and realistic (e.g., the gentle shuffling of your weapon as you look down your scope, the hard footsteps on the grass, the heavy breathing after sprinting, and the good, appropriate-sounding voice acting of the commander shouting “enter that building” or “we need to fall back”)

I’m skeptical, because the sound effects sound way too good and seamless and realistic to be true. I haven’t heard sound effects this realistic even in COD games.”

“Everything you hear in this trailer is in-game assets. No additional weapons or ambiance was recorded specifically for this trailer. Incoming fire sounds like that in game, Foley (the movement of clothing and so on) is from the game. So when you raise your gun up to aim in game, you will hear that movement sound detail. IMO we haven’t perfected it yet, but we have put a lot of effort into the speech to try and make it sound natural and humanistic in-game. So although a lot of it is made from smaller parts it sounds like natural speech.”

Battle of the God’s

Well it seems as if Sion has yet again been taking our feedback seriously and the hardcore mode has been altered to the effect of godliness. To see the news please visit here.

Snippit: “You lot are a bunch of masochists but, you’ve got it; the hardcore mode in Operation Flashpoint will contain no HUD/UI elements at all other than radio chatter subtitles. That’s right, no crosshair, no compass, no gun or ammo displays…Nothing…

There will be no objective markers, no bleed meter, no direction of fire indicator, no enemy location highlights and no damage indicators. Nothing!

To show you what we mean, here’s an example for you all taken with the new hardcore settings.”

Sion Lenton comments regarding E3 and the forum reaction

Sion Lenton,
Executive Producer of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

—–

First of all, Kudos to the Dev Team for a lot of hard work putting this build together, the reaction from the show floor was consistently positive and the queues were long.

I guess its one thing to play a game and be immersed in it and another thing to watch a recording off the screen of some “dumb COD player” (that would be me thank you very much!) playing this level for the benefit of the many press who came to see it.

Please remember we are now in an intense period of balancing and polish.

  • As you all correctly surmised this is a modified version of the intro/tutorial level running on XB360. The thinking behind this was to make something users could pick up and play, we generally had only 10 minutes to demo the game and so needed something more compact. It is not representative of the main campaign missions which are much longer and more atmospheric/tense/dramatically paced
  • This mission also has a number of secondary objectives which (if they choose to) the player can attempt, you hear them called out at the beginning
  • The demo is absolutely definitely on Assisted (Easy) mode
  • We were next to the Lego Rock band stall, nuff said! After day 2 it did begin to grate a little, however by day 3 we’d lost our marbles and were happily dancing and singing along
  • These videos do not do our game justice; they are filmed from cameras pointed at a wall-mounted screen, positioned above the screen we were playing on, so the angle wasn;t great. Our game looks beautiful!
  • The ‘Russian’ fireteam leader is supposed to be Hispanic! I don’t like his voice either, we are re-recording him!
  • Artillery will make a noise as it falls thru the air (if you’re close enough)
  • Alex Vestin’s estimates to run the island do not take into account recovery times from sprinting
  • Sprinting and jogging animations have been addressed; focal point is now more static whilst still retaining the ‘handheld’ impact of footfalls
  • We are still optimising particle effects, smoke grenades and smoke mortars already last much longer (minutes instead of seconds) this would have been easily observed if I had set one off
  • Time of day/lighting/colouration/balancing etc. Call it what you will is under constant review
  • Reload animations; not final speed
  • I enjoy the occasional banana, but I’m more of an apple man smile Sion Lenton comments regarding E3 and the forum reaction
  • Darth Eclipse, I recall meeting your dad, he must have been the guy who ‘Had to play this game and report back’
  • Artillery times were faster for the demo
  • Bottom right of the map = Time of Day
  • Everyone has exploding red barrels, and I mean ‘everyone’. (I checked smile Sion Lenton comments regarding E3 and the forum reaction)
  • Last comment on the barrels, they are not one shot explosions, often in the demo I would need to fire a couple of bursts to get it to explode
  • There is definitely distanced based sound delay, im surprised you didn’t notice it! (must have been the Jackson 5)
  • Weapon sway is in, but wasn’t in E3 build
  • The build did not lag, I refer you the filming methods
  • The guns sound like the real thing, I’ve compared both, trust me. The sound in OF: DR is fantastic, youtube does not do our awesome audio dept justice. The recent sound team updates give you a glimpse at the amazing work they are doing on the game
  • Muzzle flash differs for every weapon
  • The command radial is 3 layers deep, you only see a fraction of it in the video and it is context sensitive
  • If you want to know what hardcore really looks like, look out for an upcoming video dedicated to the hardcore mode
  • The USMC turned up and enjoyed seeing the game in action and so did the Army (obviously they thought they should have their own game as well smile Sion Lenton comments regarding E3 and the forum reaction)
  • My personal highlight of E3? Watching half a dozen infinity ward devs queuing to play OF: DR biggrin Sion Lenton comments regarding E3 and the forum reaction

I hope this info is of use to you, we most certainly do read and discuss the forums (when we have time) please bear that in mind next time your about to press submit smile Sion Lenton comments regarding E3 and the forum reaction I’d like to thank you all for your comments. We try to take as much on board as we can however we are approaching the end of development so time and resource is very precious.

It seems the reaction on the whole has been very positive and this is a real shot in the arm for the whole dev team.

Oh, one more thing, I’ve just been informed we have been nominated for best PC shooter of E3.

Sweet!

No Leaning, Freelook or TrackIR in Operation Flashpoint

Some Unfortunate news from Helios.

Sorry to disappoint some of you, but OFP: DR will not include leaning or support TrackIR.

In fairness OFP1 did not have leaning either. However this poor news for the tactical realism crowd. This means there will be no leaning around trees, walls, defences. All combat will require you to be exposed at the very least your upper body. While this will not be a game killer, it will surly change the dynamics of combat and most likely alienate some of OFP2’s more diehard fans.

It is unfortunate to see such changes to the OFP1 formula. All signs however point to a more engaging FPS experience. However it is the belief of this writer, that OFP1’s greatness stemmed by it’s functionally and the little features.

Little features took what was a open world FPS and turned into a rich killing ground. It’s unfortunate to see, that many of OFP1’s great features will not be in OFP2. We can only presume that there is a issue holding back, leaning and freelook. I would presume texture tearing and perhaps the difficulty of teaching the AI how/where to lean from around cover. I don’t really know. All I do know is APC rides and Helicopter rides are going to be far less enjoyable.

Source

*Freelook refers to Free movement of the players players head from the body, not a spectator camera. I understand there can be some confusion with this term*

Gamespy: Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising Hands-on Preview

“I didn’t like ArmA, and I never played the original Operation Flashpoint. Now that I’ve said that, you’ve either left because you’re a hardcore military sim fan, or you’ve stuck around because you’re a reasonable person who realizes that you’re about to read the thoughts of someone who probably doesn’t share your idea of fun. Or maybe I do, and you’ll share in my dismay at what I played when I recently went hands-on with Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

Gamerzines

Unsure if this is a fake preview but if not it has a very nice piece of information on the page itself, it seems they have managed to grab themselves a piece of the download pie and got a small piece of information based on the multiplayer modes previously unknown to us:

“Page seems to have been taken down but it was claiming that there are two new multiplayer modes in the works for release as DLC”

Discussion

#Edit:

Though media connections we can confirm this is not fake. Thanks Atheistium

#Edit:

Follow up leads to this message from the writer.

“The original article posted at GamerZines.com makes no mention of a further two multiplayer modes being released as free downloadable content. It describes the modes already included in the final game and, going by information provided to the media by Codemasters, speculates that further multiplayer modes may be released as downloadable content post-release.”
– Dave Scammell

I have not seen the post in question. So I’ll leave this up for Tyrokiller (original poster) to correct this message. Such is the fate with breaking news, as such no big issue – It’s how it rolls.

Video gamer flashpoint interview

Found by Dk3DKnight earlier today was an interview which seemed to outline a few nice small pieces of information, none of which are massively effective but we do seem to have a small snippit (Below) which “could” and I repeat could mean they are still considering making a map editor for the consoles:

VideoGamer.com: What’s the latest on the mission editor? As far as I’m aware it’s PC only. Is there any chance it might come to the console versions as well?

TB: “It’s something we made a decision about a long time ago when we realised how difficult it was on the console. Never say never, but it’s a very tricky point.”

I’ll repeat that:

TB: In that respect, yep, it is a bit of a niggly point that the console gamers are annoyed with. Unfortunately it’s something we can’t do anything about at the moment. But never say never.

Still take as a pinch of salt but we can still cross our fingers and hope.

Interview

“A few weeks back I went to see Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising at Codemasters HQ. While I was there I had a chat with executive producer Sion Lenton, who had quite a lot to say about Codemasters’ take new on the military shooter. What follows is my transcript of that conversation, in which Lenton talks about the balance of realism in the game, the “documentary” feel, the horror of war, and responsibility of making a serious war game accessible to the majority of gamers.”

Alms for the poor? You can now Donate for OFP:DR Growth.

As requested by a few members of the official community, I have made a way for donation to be made towards the growth of OFP2.

pixel Alms for the poor? You can now Donate for OFP:DR Growth.

This button will allow you to donate any amount. All money will be used to grow OFP:DR and the community around it. No money goes to personal use and this is not affiliated with Codemasters other then the level of involvement, I and Helios have with promoting OFP:DR. Please donate gloriously and often, support your fellow members that donate so it’s a mutual strive for community wealth and prosperity.

Cannot donate?
Don’t worry. Always remember wealth is not purely though money. Promote the community services like the Toolbar and the Mailing list on new websites and you’ll help the community grow just as much as a prize will. Your fellow fans will thank you for your support.

Laurens Q&A

The Q&A finally ended at 8:00pm tonight,

It was quite successful with lauren being able to answer a few previously unknown answers to a few questions we had. She done an excellent job with handle the questions and even under the watchful eye of helios answered well for the community.

So please say thanks for taking her time to listen to the community and answer accordingly.

Lastly, we have been aprised of a new video from her/ from helios that will be released next week, the video itself will be of the vehicles in the game and we are hoping it to be an excellent video for us to view.
